CGTMSE lets a bank lend to a small business without asking for collateral. It is one of the most useful — and most misunderstood — schemes for Indian MSMEs.
What CGTMSE is
CGTMSE is the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises, set up by the Government of India and SIDBI. It is not a loan. It is a guarantee: when a bank lends to an eligible micro or small enterprise, the trust guarantees a large part of that loan. Because the bank's risk is covered, it can lend without collateral or a third-party guarantee.
Who is eligible
- Micro and small enterprises — new or existing — in eligible manufacturing and service activities.
- The enterprise must be registered on Udyam. Without the Udyam Registration Certificate the business is not treated as an MSE under the scheme, however good its financials.
- The loan must come from a lender that is a member of the scheme. Most banks and many NBFCs are.
Both term loans and working-capital limits can be covered.
What it costs
The lender pays an annual guarantee fee to the trust, and this is usually passed on to the borrower. The fee rate, the maximum loan size and the share of the loan that is guaranteed are all set by the scheme and revised from time to time — so we confirm the current figures with the lender for your case rather than quote them here.
Documents the bank will ask for
- KYC of the business and promoters (PAN, Aadhaar, photographs)
- Udyam Registration Certificate
- GST registration and GST returns
- Income tax returns of the business and promoters
- Bank statements of the business current account
- Audited financials and, for larger loans, a project report or CMA data
- Quotations for machinery or equipment, if the loan is for these
What you will not need is property papers for collateral — being collateral-free is the point of the scheme.
CGTMSE or Mudra?
Both help small businesses, but they are different schemes with different guarantee funds, so a single loan is not covered by both. Mudra suits smaller ticket sizes with lighter paperwork; CGTMSE covers a wider range of loan sizes. Which one fits depends on how much you need and your business profile.
How we help
We check whether your business and the loan you need fit the scheme, prepare the file with the right documents the first time, and approach the member lenders most likely to sanction it.
General information, not financial advice. Lender policies and scheme rules change — we confirm the current position for your case.
